Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
I have my own family of 4. My wife Katie is a math teacher in Berkeley County, and we have two awesome girls, Pearl and Miriam. Let’s not forget Rori, our shepherd mix pup! As a family, we love the outdoors, gardening, and cooking. I’m looking forward to taking the family rafting and kayaking when the kids are older.
Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
Fox Music House has always been my career path. Having a family that’s always been in the music industry, it felt natural to continue that tradition. I personally love the customer relationships that we get to build and see grow, not to mention all the amazing ways music impacts their lives.
Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
5 Loaves (love Joe and Kasey), Lewis Barbecue, Butcher & the Bee, Harold’s Cabin, Tobin’s Market
Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
Forever
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
My dad. I admire his breath of knowledge, endless energy, and golden heart of service to fellow man. In addition to my dad, I would say Oscar Rivers Jr. This man is an expert saxophonist, pianist, and storyteller! He went to Berklee School of Music for saxophone and picked up piano later on in life after having a dream where God told him to put down the sax and play piano… and he never looked back. He’s played for Quincy Jones and even speaks fluent Spanish. I think he’s in his 80s, is still a Spanish teacher, and gigs weekly. He’s just such a super talented and unique individual!
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
Spain – I love the people, food, and history. Also, Tel Aviv, Israel!
Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
Heist with Gene Hackman
Q: What advice would you give to people?
Instead of giving advice, listen to what people need. From there, you can then find out what’s more helpful.
Q: What is something on your bucket list?
Participate in a Triathlon and hike the Appalachian Trail
Q: What is your go to band when you cant decide what to listen to?
I like to match music to my mood, but some of my favorites include Ranky Tanky, Thundercat, the Allman Brothers, and Medeski Martin & Wood.
Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
Both Berlin’s Restaurant Supply and Clothing store. Also, the Greater St Luke AME Church- it was the Old Synagogue my great grandparents lived near, one of the first organ dedications I attended, and still doing great things in the community.
Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
Nathan East and Victor Wooten at Third and Lindsey
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
Charleston’s friendliness
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
Of course watching my kids grow up and play sports and instruments. I also want to finish the Tennessee part of the Appalachian Trail.
Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I’m an avid gardener! You should see my backyard.
Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
Ein Gedi, Israel
Q: Favorite month? favorite holiday? and best single day on the calendar?
March for a lot of reasons – seasons change, and the March Equinox usually falls on my birthday, the 20th! Favorite holiday is Passover!
Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
The food at Charleston Place
Q: Who inspires you to be better?
My kids
Q: What is one or two of your favorite smells?
I would choose barbecue and any of the mediterranean spices like zaatar.
Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
Sleep, Peace, and Love
