A Short History of Charleston County, SC

English settlers founded Charles Towne in 1670. At first, the town stood on the west bank of the Ashley River. About ten years later, the settlers moved it to the peninsula, where downtown Charleston is today. As a result, the city grew into one of the busiest ports in early America.

You can still see that history on almost every street. For example, you can walk past the pastel homes of Rainbow Row or take a boat to Fort Sumter, where the Civil War began in 1861. You can also visit Charles Towne Landing, the site of the first settlement.
