Katherine Brown

Katherine Brown grew up all over the world as a Navy brat, but Folly Beach always felt like her home away from home. Now she is happy to call Summerville home with her husband Justin and their 4 kids.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
Justin and I met in college at Wake Forest. We moved to Charleston in 2006 and then to Summerville in 2015. Justin is a pharmacist. We have two daughters and two sons ranging in age from almost three to ten years old.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I was a teacher for 11 years but left the classroom to start my own nonprofit. The Boon Project for Young Adults Fighting Cancer is focused on providing services for an underserved demographic. I love making a difference and encouraging others through my work and the relationships built there.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
Five Loaves, Oscars, Lowcountry Fish Camp

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
We moved to Summerville six years ago.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
I lived in Scotland as a kid and would love to go back to the UK and take my family. My kids are really into Harry Potter, so I know they’d love to see that part of the world.

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
My all time favorite TV show is probably Friends.

Q: What advice would you give to people?
Be kind.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
I’m a Navy brat with friends scattered all over the world. I’d be happy to meet any of them for lunch at Five Loaves.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
I love the charming downtown area of Summerville.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
Busy juggling life!

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I have an identical twin sister (but my family obviously knows this).

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
Capri, Italy is one of the most beautiful places I’ve been.

Q: Favorite month? favorite holiday? and best single day on the calendar?
Christmas is the best! I love family time and decorations.

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
This August we spent a long weekend in the mountains with my entire family. It was the first time we’d gone away as a whole family since 2015 and the first trip since my sons were born. It was 3 days of fun on the river and around the fire pit– definitely a 10 out of 10.

Q: Who inspires you to be better?
My kids.

Q: What is one or two of your favorite smells?
Salt air.

Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
