Hannah Karras Dunbar Zervos

Hannah Karras Dunbar Zervos is the owner of Palindrome Fitness, a personal training business in West Ashley. Born in Chicago, but raised in both Miami and Indiana, Hannah has been a Charleston resident for 10 years now and calls West Ashley home. She’s been training clients for 6 years, but Hannah knew ever since the age of 11 or 12 that she was meant to be her own boss. She was creating workout programs just as early. Her childhood special, the 7:30 workout, was religiously followed every night, even when that meant getting the friends involved on sleepover nights. Hannah’s love for our community is ever present in her appreciation of and dedication to the people around her.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
I’ve been married for three years. I have two dogs. I have two parents in Indiana— they’re great. They’re my role models in life. My brother is in Hawaii and my sister is in LA. They’re my best friends for life. I’m super super tight with my siblings. Around them I’m completely at ease; I can be my total true self. We’re also Greek, which is a big part of my family life tradition-wise.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I started my business three years ago. My purpose is to help people and my passion is movement, so training is perfect because I get to teach people how to use their bodies in a way that gives them the strength to do the things that they want to do. I also love that not only do I get to play all day in the gym, but I also get to interact with people from all walks of life and learn about their perspectives. I’m always learning and having my eyes opened to new things that I wouldn’t have come across in another environment. For my goals for the future, I want to impact a lot of people. I want to give them knowledge so that they have the ability to make themselves strong and confident. Without that knowledge it’s easy to feel stuck.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
167 Raw, Langdon’s, Bon Bahn Mi, Yo Burrito

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
Carol Cottrell really shifted my perspective. She’s a medium, which I was kind of unsure about before, but she’s opened my eyes to a lot. Her work is really cool; it’s all centered on love, and she really helps people heal.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
New Zealand. You can surf and hike in the same day. Bungee jumping was invented there. Not to mention Lord of the Rings was filmed there.

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
For movies I’d have to say the Lord of the Rings series, Star Wars, Avengers— all those nerdy classics. TV show would be Outlander.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
Zac Efron. I was really impressed with his show Down to Earth and seeing how he shifted throughout the experience. I would be interested to hear about what he’s learned and how he’s going to carry his experiences into the rest of his life. We’d get take-out from Co-op on Sullivan’s Island.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
All the bridges. Getting to drive over a bridge, especially at sunset, and see the sky and the water is so beautiful. I always got to see the best sunsets driving home in the evening during grad school.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
With three little kids, living in Charleston, traveling all around the world. Business wise I want to be in a place where I’m working with more people but also have more freedom.

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I can stick my big toe in my mouth.

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
I think that everywhere in the world has its own beauty, so it’s really hard to pick just one. However, stateside I can think of two places that really struck me. First, the Grand Canyon at sunrise is one of the most serene, peaceful places. It was incredible because it’s so much bigger than you could ever try to rationalize. Second is Canyon Lands. It was the first place I’ve ever heard total silence and getting to see the stars there was very cool.
