After spending years as a corporate sales executive, and burnt out on traveling 32 weeks out of the year, Joanna decided to turn her passion into her full time, and opened Jibe Cycling Studio in 2018. Jibe is a rhythm based indoor cycling studio, with locations in Portland & Yarmouth, Maine and most recently, Charleston. When she is not instructing, in the studio or wearing the many hats of a small business owner, you can find her out on the water with her husband and 3 dogs.
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
By family, you mean dogs?! I have three of them! Two German Shepherd rescues ( Bailer & Saint) and our newest addition, Scuppers (Golden Cavapoo.. but he looks like a mini Golden)!
Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I love to inspire change- whether it is something small like making a rider smile and sweat, or bigger like a lifestyle change. So many people know what they want, they just need someone to tell them ‘Yes, go for it!’
Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
Right now I am loving Park & Grove, Xiao Bao Biscuit, and The Daily for breakfast
Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
I have been in Charleston off and on for the last 6 years, but I just moved here full time last August.
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
Everyone. Everyone has an interesting story to tell, you just have to be willing to listen!
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
Next on my list are Croatia and Portugal. I have never been to either and I have heard only good things.

Anything Bravo.
Q: What advice would you give to people?
It’s actually incredibly simply, and the mantra for how i live my life: If something isn’t working, change it.
Q: What is something on your bucket list?
Egypt! I have always bene fascinated by the pyramids.
Q: What is your go to band when you cant decide what to listen to?
This is a hard one when my job is part dj.. but Luke Combs is really speaking to me these days.
Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
Too many to list- but the key factors are owner involvement. So many of the businesses I love in Charleston have hands on owners, which makes all the difference in the quality , the vibe and the hospitality!
Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
I would love to sit down with Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice. They are the former owners of Soul Cycle. I find their story, their drive, their problem solving so inspiring. I think they would love Basic Kitchen.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
How friendly everyone is! The first day I moved here, I got caught in a complete downpour. The cashier asked if i lived nearby, and then would not let me leave until I borrowed her umbrella. People genuinely want to be helpful and want to see you succeed.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
Next question! I don’t like to put limits on myself.
Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I was recruited to ski D1, but, get this.. at the time I didn’t want to ‘work that hard’. I don’t have any regrets, but i often think about the hours i put in on the bike and on my business..and I roll my eyes at my former self. I had no idea what hard work really was and how rewarding it can be!
